Community Service

Since 1983, the commission — on behalf of the farmers it represents — has had a policy of community outreach.  Through the following endeavors, California’s fresh grape farmers express their collective commitment to community.

Grape Workers Scholarships

This program provides $48,000 in scholarship funds each year to table grape vineyard workers or their children.  Three $16,000 scholarships are awarded to talented students planning to attend 4-year universities in California.

Produce for Better Health Foundation

The commission works with the Produce for Better Health Foundation and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to implement the national 5 A Day for Better Health program, which seeks to decrease the incidence of cancer and other diseases in the U.S. by promoting a higher consumption of fruits and vegetables.

Spoons Across America

The table grape industry is a founding partner of this children’s culinary education organization, which provides food and nutrition education to children, families and teachers.

Grape and Gift Donations

To support the programs of organizations serving social needs, the industry annually donates fresh California grapes and various gift items for community events, fundraisers, auctions and exhibits.

Innovation in Teaching Mini-Grants

This program provides grants to teachers who have developed innovative teaching units but lack the necessary funds for implementation.  Up to ten grants are awarded each year.
